Field visit to Pankisi Gorge
I am bursting with excitement! The representative just walked in and asked if I wanted to go on a field visit tomorrow. I looked over at my boss, she nodded, and I just got cleared to go to the Pankisi Gorge in Northeastern Georgia. There are about 240,000 IDPs in Georiga but the Pankisi Gorge is the only place with refugees in the country. According to Refugees International,
When armed hostilities broke out in Chechnya in 1999, over 200,000 people fled their homes to neighboring republics... several thousand crossed over the mountains into Georgia. The majority, about 4,000, took refuge in Georgia’s Pankisi Gorge area...
About 2,500 refugees remain there in an area with 8,000 inhabitants. They are not able to go back home due to insecurity, human rights abuses, and destroyed houses. Unemployment is 100% and there is a great deal of illness, mental health problems, and malnutrition among small children. About 85% of the refugees are women and children. We are going there to assess the primary health facilities. Finally something more tangible.
